ABOUT LASTOVO

Lastovo is the island of rich and turbulent history ever since the Roman times, it boasts 46 islets, fields and churches and it is home to the most particular carneval. Chimneys in the town of Lastovo are another characteristic feature originating from the era of the Republic of Dubrovnik.

After the the second world war it remained for many years a Yugoslav military and navy stronghold with numerous army objects, cannon nests, tunnels, submarine pens. During that period it was closed to foreign visitors and it opened to the world in the 90s of the last century. The decades of isolation left the mark on the island’s life at the same time preserving it more than other islands.

In 2006. Lastovo and its archipelago became protected Nature park.

NOTE: The meeting point for this tour is most commonly in Split; we meet there, get the kayaks and gear, take the ferry to Lastovo. At the end of the tour we do the same and take the ferry back to Split. However if you plan to be on Korcula island before or after the tour you can also choose Korcula island as your starting/finish port.

ITINERARY

DAY 1

Departure by ferry from Split or Korcula, arrival at Ubli (Lastovo). Overnight in private accomodation Ubli. Depending on the day we go we will tell you whether we arrive in the afternoon or late in the evening. In the first case we will get supplies in the local shop and have dinner later, alternatively there will be no dinner so we reccomend you grab some lunch before the ferry in Split and buy something for dinner. Private accommodation.

DAY 2

Kayaking from Ubli around Mrčara islet and along the south side of Lastovo to a big bay known as Skrivena Luka witnessing cannons nests, sharp coastal rocks and a couple of beaches along the way. Once you leave your kayaks you’ll go to up to the lighthouse to settle there and then stroll down to Portoros restaurant in the bay. After dinner there’s transfer to take you up to the lighthouse for the night.

DAY 3

After breakfast you set out kayaking to reach spectacular vertical cliffs of the Struga lighthouse guaranteed to make you feel tiny against their stunningly high and natural rocky amphitheater. Then you’ll kayak on to explore the islets forming the archipelago off the east side of Lastovo and finally on the north side in a little cove to leave the kayaks for the night. We’ll settle in a private accommodation and go to the old town of Lastovo known as the village to feel its charm and have a nice dinner.

DAY 4

Today you’ll kayak along the north side back to Ubli but not without checking few attractive spots first. When you get to Ubli you will go to settle in your accomdation and in the evening there is dinner in a nearby local restaurant. Before dinner you can buy in Ubli your breakfast for the next morning since tomorrow you are taking very early ferry when everything is closed.

DAY 5

In the morning you need to get up early to get the ferry at 04:30 from Ubli which arrives to Split at 09:00.

Alternatively, (depending on the season), instead of taking early morning ferry at 04:00 there is another one at 11:15 from Ubli to Vela Luka town on the island of Korčula (on the way to Split) that arrives to Vela Luka at 13:15 and then at 13:45 you take another ferry in Vela Luka that arrives to Split at 16:30.

Should you decide to take this option then there is breakfast for you in the morning in Ubli.

Price is provided upon request.

Therefore you don’t find frequent ferry lines or many bars and shops. Your guide has all the relevant info considering timetables, shops and distances for where you have to buy snacks, water and such.

FAQ

HOW BIG ARE THE GROUPS?

Minimum 3, ideal up to 8, maximum number is 12 people.

WHAT ABOUT PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AND FITNESS LEVEL NEEDED FOR THE TOUR?

Previous kayaking experience is definitely welcome, but even more than that it’s important to possess a recreational level of physical fitness; you are facing 4 – 5 hours of paddling every day so it helps if you have done it before. On a windy day (it sometimes happen-) you must be ready to paddle harder and longer. Ability to swim is also required.

MEETING POINT?

We meet in Split either one day before the tour or in the harbor on the day of the tour – let us know when you are coming and we’ll give you the meeting time/space coordinates. Alternatively if you are coming to Korcula we can meet there and have it as our starting or finish point.

HOW DOES IT START?

We take the ferry in Split port loaded with kayaks and gear, cross to Vis, unload everything in the port of Vis and soon get started. Of course, well before that we’ll provide you with all other relevant info on what to bring and when (food provisions) best to do it.

KAYAKS AND GEAR?

We use both single and double sit-in sea kayaks equipped with rudder. We provide carbon paddles, life vests, spray skirts, drybags…

The choice of kayak is yours – if not experienced then we reccommend a double kayak due to its stability and comfort. Bear in mind that double kayaks are also known as “divorcers“ or “divorce makers“, so make sure you know well your kayaking partner-)

CAN THE CONDITIONS AND WEATHER AFFECT OUR TRIP?

Being a remote island the winds and waves can sometimes be challenging, especially for a beginner. Nevertheless we have done this trip quite a few times, actually the founder of the company was probaby the first to have done it commercially (within a former company) while others followed.

We monitor the conditions and based on our experience, knowledge of the area, weather forecast and opinion of locals choose the best options for our paddling itinerary.

The climate is a mild Mediterrannean which means there’s a lot of sun, the season of sunny weather usually starts in May and it goes all the way till mid/end of October. Second half of June, July, August and first half of September are rather hot (25 – 35 degrees celsius) with occasional rainfall.

CASH, CREDIT CARDS?

Always good to have some cash on you and you’ll find ATMs in every mayor island town, while they’ll be more scarse in smaller communities. There’s still quite a few restaurants and bars on islands taking cash only so be prepared. Mayority of shops take credit cards.

DISCOUNT AVAILABLE?

Yes, for groups and depending on the time of the booking/season, feel free to ask and we’ll get back to you.

THIS IS SUGGESSTED ITINERARY AND CAN BE CUSTOMISED UPON REQUEST.
